AI in 2023

AI in 2023 : My 10 Key Moments

AI In 2023 has several significant events and trends shaped the landscape of AI and its implications on society. I am sharing my key moments; let me know your thoughts.

  1. Launch of GPT-4: AI in 2023 was democratised further when GPT-4 was introduced by OpenAI, enhancing capabilities in creativity, visual input, and more extended context. This included several offerings like Dall-E in the paid version. This was a masterstroke in value for the user from a user perspective.
  2. AI-Generated Images Deceiving the Public: AI in 2023 was the year deepfakes came to global attention, with instances like the fabricated image of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket showcasing the potential for AI to mislead and impact public perception.
  3. Global AI Safety Summit: The UK government spearheaded an AI safety summit culminating in the Bletchley Declaration in October 2023. This happened a few miles from my business HQ. I am proud to have been part of the event as well.
  4. Microsoft’s AI Integration in Windows: Microsoft’s introduction of Copilot, an AI tool embedded in its products like Windows 11 and Microsoft 365, showcased the integration of AI into everyday software applications.
  5. Hollywood’s Response to AI: The Writers Guild of America’s strike against the potential replacement of writers by AI in the industry underlined the tension between AI advancements and job security. As an occasional writer and bestselling author, this caught my attention.
  6. Controversy Involving OpenAI’s CEO: AI in 2023 came to an exciting point with the temporary firing and reinstatement of Sam Altman as OpenAI’s CEO brought internal dynamics and ethical debates within major AI companiesto light.
  7. Google Gemini: The introduction of Google’s Gemini was another pivotal moment that will potentially be another critical moment in the evolution of the current wave of AI development.
  8. AI Policy and Regulation Developments: As a certified AI ethics practice, AI in 2023 reached an interesting point when the global conversation around AI policy and regulation intensified, with significant movements such as the European Union’s AI Act and the U.S. executive order on AI, aiming to set standards and rules for AI development and application.
  9. Legal and Ethical Pushbacks Against AI: The year saw many lawsuits concerning AI’s use of intellectual property and innovative countermeasures like the data-poisoning tool “Nightshade”, developed to protect artists’ rights against AI training practices.
  10. AI in Nigeria:  AI in Nigeria was co-founded by Ehia Erhaboh and Dotun Adeoye to bring together the AI ecosystem and imbibe global best practices and knowledge in AI.

Bottom Line

These events and trends underscore AI’s dynamic and rapidly evolving nature, reflecting its growing impact across various sectors and raising critical questions about its ethical, social, and regulatory aspects.
